What makes Chicago Chicago? What is so special and unique about Chicago?

I guess the same thing that makes you you. You are an individual unique human. Chicago is an individual unique city.

And that’s the key: individual and unique. Chicago has it.

Take an average small town. It looks like any average small town. Strip malls on the outside, Main St or small downtown in the center, a street grid with look-alike houses. You cannot tell one town from another. They look the same, there is no individuality.

But there are cities with developed personalities. Like a gemstone personality has different facets: people, history, unique location, impressive architecture, first-rate museums, brilliant chefs. But there is also a dark side like high crime rate and corrupt politicians. Being an individual doesn’t mean you are perfect.

Chicago definitely has a personality, it is not a forgettable nobody.

It is bigger than a sum of its parts. It is a living and ever changing organism.
